A practice built on the belief that
small businesses deserve long thinking

We help owners in Malaysia step back, look further, and make decisions that serve where they want to go — not just where they are today.

Our Story

How Merbau came to be

Merbau began with a simple frustration. The owner of a trading business in Melaka spent years watching capable entrepreneurs work incredibly hard — and still feel lost about where their businesses were actually going. The daily demands of running operations, managing people and keeping cash flowing left almost no room to think past the next quarter.

The practice was founded in 2018 to address exactly that gap. Not with frameworks imported from corporate consulting firms, and not with generic business school models — but with patient, honest conversation that helps owners think for themselves about the future they actually want.

The name Merbau refers to the ironwood tree native to the Malaysian peninsula — known for its density, durability and deep roots. It felt like the right image for a practice concerned with building businesses that last.

Our Mission

What we are here to do

Our work is to help small business owners in Malaysia think more clearly about the longer view. Most owners are capable people who simply do not have the time or the outside perspective to reflect on where their business is truly headed.

We create the conditions for that thinking to happen — through structured sessions, written reflection and an ongoing conversation that keeps the horizon visible even as the daily pressures accumulate.

What we value

  • Candour — we say what seems true, respectfully and plainly
  • Patience — we do not rush the thinking or the conclusions
  • Practicality — every engagement ends with something usable
  • Discretion — what you share stays within the engagement

How We Work

Standards we hold ourselves to

Client confidentiality

Everything discussed in sessions is held in strict confidence. Formal confidentiality agreements are available for any engagement on request.

Written deliverables

Every engagement produces a written document — not notes, but a considered record of thinking and direction that clients can return to and share with trusted colleagues.

Prepared sessions

We do not arrive at sessions cold. Every meeting is preceded by a preparation process — for us and for the client — so the time is used well.

Conflict of interest policy

We do not take referral fees or commissions from third parties. Our only interest is in giving clients the clearest thinking we can.

Data protection

Client data is stored securely, used only for the purpose of the engagement, and deleted on request or at the close of the relationship.

Member, SME Association of Malaysia

Merbau maintains active membership with the SME Association of Malaysia and keeps current with developments in Malaysian small business conditions.

Our Expertise

Business consulting grounded in Malaysian small business realities

Running a small business in Malaysia involves a specific set of pressures that generic consulting approaches rarely account for. Family expectations, thin margins, dependence on key relationships, seasonal cash flow and the difficulty of hiring capable people are common threads. Merbau's advisory work is built around these realities, not around frameworks developed for large organisations in other parts of the world.

Our consultants have direct experience building businesses in Melaka and understand the local context — from the dynamics of the heritage tourism economy to the practical considerations of running a service business in a mid-sized Malaysian city. That context matters when thinking about a three-year horizon for a business that is deeply tied to place.

We work across a range of small business types — retail, trades, professional services, food and beverage, and light manufacturing — and adapt the consulting approach to the specific situation of each owner. The questions we ask and the frameworks we use are shaped by what is actually in front of us, not by a standardised model.

The longer-view orientation of our work reflects a particular belief: that most small business owners already know what matters to them; what they need is the space, structure and outside perspective to think it through clearly. Our role is to provide that, not to tell owners what their businesses should look like.
